Ingredients Needed
to prepare this yummy recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- Steaks: choose your prefer lean cut of steak such as sirloin, flank or rump
- Mushrooms: I like to opt for cremini or chestnut mushrooms for the deeper colour and flavour
- Garlic: For convenience, I opt for jarred minced garlic. If you prefer fresh garlic, note that 1 teaspoon of jarred minced garlic is equivalent to 1 clove of fresh garlic.
- Light Cream Cheese: like Philadelphia or a stores own brand (do not mistake this for quark)
- Stock: beef or chicken stock is fine for this recipe. It's essential to use the correct ratio of stock cubes to water, as not all stock cubes are identical. Using too few can lead to a bland, watery broth, while too many may create a stock that's overly salty.
- Salt and Pepper - These basic yet essential flavour enhancers are key for elevating the taste of your dishes. No food will ever be bland when these are used to season to taste.
- Low Calorie Spray - Use your preferred choice of low calorie spray, I prefer olive oil or avocado sprays without any added emulsifiers.
- Fresh parsley - it's the perfect finishing touch for the dish. You can skip it if you'd like, but it adds a delightful and healthy touch of green to the overall presentation
Once you've gathered all the ingredients and prepared them accordingly, you're all set to create this easy and delightful recipe.

Choosing the Best Steak
When considering low-calorie options, certain cuts of steak, such as sirloin, tenderloin (also known as fillet steak), rump steak, or flank steak, emerge as top choices.
Opting for these lean cuts can significantly reduce calorie intake while still delivering a satisfying meal. These cuts typically have less marbling and fat content compared to ribeye or strip loin, making them ideal for those watching their calorie consumption.
Additionally, trimming any visible fat before cooking can further decrease the calorie count without compromising on flavour.
How to Cook the Perfect Steak
When it comes to seasoning steak, simplicity often reigns supreme. Just a sprinkle of salt and pepper can work wonders, allowing the natural flavours of the meat to shine through and complementing the delicious depth of flavours in the sauce.
As for cooking the steak, having the right pan makes all the difference. My personal favourite is a cast iron skillet, renowned for its ability to deliver a hearty sear and lock in juices. However, you can also achieve equally delicious results with a non-stick grill or frying pan. The key is to ensure the pan is nice and hot before adding your steak, allowing for that perfect caramelized crust to form. Preheat the pan over medium-high heat for a few minutes until it's hot enough to make the steak sizzle upon contact. For a steak cooked to medium-rare, sear each side for about 3-4 minutes, depending on the thickness of the steak, then allow it to rest before serving.
Sides for Steak with Creamy Peppercorn Sauce
When serving steak with peppercorn sauce, consider these delicious side dish options:
- Homemade oven-baked fries or Crushed Roast Potatoes
- Sautéed Brussels sprouts or tender greens such as broccolini, asparagus or green beans
- Roasted Peppers, Courgette and Onion in a little olive oil.
- Vibrant mixed salad with your favourite salad ideas
- Spicy Rice for a touch of heat
- Creamy Ligher mashed potatoes for indulgent comfort
- Soured Cream and Spring Onion Cauliflower Mash for a low carb side
With these diverse options, you can create a well-rounded and flavourful meal that perfectly complements your steak with peppercorn sauce.

This sauce is amazing! I never thought to use Philly for a creamy sauce and I rarely remember to buy cream. I've used the idea several times just to make a general, light creamy sauce to go with pasta since discovering the recipe. Great idea, thanks!
