Enjoy the comfort of this Yummy Crispy Potato Topped Meat Pie (Minced Beef Hotpot) - a beloved family dish featuring savoury minced beef and tender vegetables, all lovingly swathed in a rich, umami-packed gravy and topped with golden, crispy potato slices.

The gravy takes this dish to the next level with a secret ingredient: Marmite. This British staple enriches the gravy with deep umami flavor, perfectly accentuating the minced beef and vegetables.

Minced Beef Hotpot
We all love a cottage or shepherd's pie, but sometimes you just don't fancy the mash topping, right?
This Crispy Potato Topped Meat Pie is delicious and super easy to make, based on the popular Lancashire Hotpot recipe but uses Ground beef (Beef Mince) instead of cuts of meat like beef, mutton or lamb or sometimes even offal like kidneys.
Beef Mince (ground beef) is a budget-friendly ingredient and is family-friendly and we all love a meal that the whole family can dig in and enjoy.
Marmite Gravy
There is one ingredient I like to add to this, that you either love or hate - the good ole marmite!! It adds a lovely flavour to the gravy, but if you really really detest the stuff, just leave it out, it won't affect the flavour I promise. Although even if you hate the stuff you probably won't even realize it is added into this recipe.
What it does is adds a great boost of umami to this gravy of this dish, and gives the gravy that yummy rich flavour.

What is Umami?
Umami is described as the fifth taste along with sweetness, saltiness, sourness and bitterness and is defined as a "pleasant savoury taste" in foods.
Popular ingredients for adding umami to recipes are things like fish sauce, mushrooms, seaweed (nori), soy sauce, miso, kimchi and certain cheeses like parmesan.
What type of Potatoes?
The best type of potatoes to use for this Crispy Potato Topped Meat Pie is the floury varieties or ones that are a mix between waxy and floury.
My favourite variety this side of the Atlantic in Canada or the USA is Russet Potatoes or Yukon Golds or in the UK Maris Piper, King Edward or Elfe Varieties.

Sides for Crispy Potato Topped Meat Pie
I like to serve this pie alongside some greens like sauteed kale, asparagus, green beans or tender stem broccoli, but it is perfectly filling just as it is.

I made this last week and it was really easy. I like the recipe because you can adapt it to whatever you have in the fridge and cupboards.

I made this yesterday but when I went to cook it I realised I had extra lean beef not mince so I just put all the ingredients in a casserole dish and cooked it for two hours. I did the potatoes as instructed and put them on top 30 minutes before it was cooked and it was really really good, so thanks.

Please help! I would love to make this but am stuck trying to get tomato paste. I can only find tomato purée. Your advice and guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you, Donna x
Shevy (Slimming Eats) says
tomato puree is the same as tomato paste. Enjoy 😉

This is my first time leaving a comment on a recipe but I had to cos it's soooo so good! I've made hotpot loads of times and usually just wing it and hadn't followed a recipe before, and I thought my hotpots were nice but this one is next level the only thing I did different was add half an Oxo cube (I used a rich beef stock pot too) thanks!

Can you freeze this?
Siobhan (Slimming Eats) says
yes this will freeze okay - enjoy!!
Nadia says
Hi, instead of paste can I add ketchup?
Siobhan (Slimming Eats) says
I don't recommend it, as the tomato paste is concentrated so helps to thicken the gravy.

Was looking for a beef mince recipe for dinner (had not been shopping and only had mince left in the fridge) and found this one. Having no marmite I replaced it with vegemite and it worked a treat - gave the dish a lovely flavour. and I liked the fact that you can add any uncooked vegetables that you have in your crisper. Everyone loved it Will definitely become a regular in our household

The recipe says 1 serving so am i right is saying the Calories of 390 is for the whole thing?
Siobhan (Slimming Eats) says
No you are reading the nutritional box incorrectly. The recipe box states the recipe yields (serves) 4 - then the nutritional box states for 1 serving it is 390 calories, not 390 calories for the whole thing. Hope that helps 🙂
