Blueberry BBQ Sauce - tangy smoky barbecue sauce made with delicious fresh blueberries and a blend of spices for that yummy barbecue taste.

Blueberry Barbecue Sauce
I often pick up a big container or two of blueberries when at the grocery store, especially if I go to costco, they are perfect as a snack, over yoghurt or with my delicious American Style Pancakes. But sometimes I will forget I have bought them and then want an easy recipe to quickly use them up before they spoil and this blueberry BBQ sauce is perfect.
Don't let the thought of blueberries in a bbq sauce put you off, they really do add a lovely flavour. This blueberry sauce is sweet and tangy, it is great added to pulled pork or smear it over some chicken and top with cheese.
Can I use frozen blueberries?
Not get fresh on hand, but have a bag of frozen blueberries in your freezer and wondering if you can use them instead. Yep there is no reason why not, just ensure they are 100% blueberries and do not have any sugar added which may up the calories of this recipe.
I always try and keep to the habit of checking ingredients list if something comes in any kind of packaging, as then there are no surprises.

What is Liquid Smoke?
Wondering what liquid smoke is and where to get it? Liquid smoke is a natural water soluble liquid that is made by condensing the smoke from burning wood. It is the perfect addition to a recipe when you want to add that smokey flavour of barbecue food. Usually it would take a long slow process of cooking meats over smoked wood chips to add that smokey flavour, but the liquid smoke cuts some of the corners allowing you to still achieve that smokey taste.
Hardcore barbecuers would probably not agree and will stick to the traditional method for sure, but for me it works perfectly.
You can buy it from Amazon and maybe some larger grocery stores.
Substitutes for Liquid Smoke
If you can't get hold of any liquid smoke and really want that smokey flavour. Smoked Paprika will do the trick ,we already use it in this recipe, the liquid smoke just ups that flavour a little bit more.
So if not using the liquid smoke, you will need to adjust the amount of smoked paprika to your personal taste. Just be careful with some varieties if you don't like spicy food, as some are hot (it should say hot on the label).

Can this Blueberry BBQ Sauce be frozen?
You may be wondering if you can freeze this sauce, and the answer is yes. Either freeze in one container, or divide into smaller portions and freeze, so you can take out what you want without having to defrost the lot.
Want to make a larger batch? Just double or triple up the recipe.
Can I use sweetener instead of sugar?
If you want to reduce the sugar content in this recipe, then a sweetener of your choice should work. The brown sugar replacements by Swerve or Sukrin are a great natural substitute. But for me a barbecue sauce has to have the real stuff, I just find sauces need the caramelization of real sugar to have that perfect taste.
