Deliciously Sweet & Sticky Toffee Apples. Indulge the 5-year-old inside you with this crunchy, caramel treat!

We are almost into October, and you know what that means? Halloween is fast approaching and you can't have Halloween without one of these amazing Toffee Apples.
I've always had a thing for Toffee Apples, I blame my sweet tooth, whenever we would go to the fair or seaside, it was either a toffee apple or candy floss that would be on my radar.

Now living in Canada, they seem even more popular, but not just toffee apples, all kinds of coatings to choose from and my kids just like me, are fascinated by them.
Traditionally Toffee Apples are coated in a mixture made from sugar, syrup, and water. But from experimenting, I discovered you actually don't need the syrup and can easily make these just with sugar, which in turn reduces the calories meaning we can enjoy one of these versions while calorie counting.

These delicious toffee apples feature a delightful crunchy toffee coating enveloping a sweet, crisp apple underneath. Admittedly, the sugary aspect might not be the healthiest, but hey, there's still an apple involved, and we're all entitled to treats. That's why having options like this to enjoy occasionally is truly important.
Now, how do you whip up these incredible Toffee Apples?

The one thing you really do need is a candy thermometer, you can do them without one, but it's tricky business guessing that the sugar syrup is at the right temp, get it not hot enough and it won't set, got a little bit over and it will have that horrid burnt taste.
A candy thermometer will mean you can get it to the exact temperature it needs to get to with no guesswork involved.
I use one like this Kitchencraft Thermometer on Amazon, there are many out there to choose from and most are reasonably priced, a great gadget to have, especially if you make your own jams etc too.
For the apples, you need a small variety, too big and you won't have enough mixture to coat them with. I use small McIntosh apples, they have a lovely deep red and green colour and are crisp and tart, perfect kind of apples for a toffee apple.

As well as the apples, some kind of stick to hold these sticky treats with is important. I just used wooden ice lolly sticks.
To get the crunchy toffee, just whisk together the sugar and water, add a few drops of red food colouring for that traditional bright red colour of a toffee apple, then add it to a saucepan over a high heat.

It will take a while to get to the correct temp, so patience is key, but don't leave it unattended, as once the temperature starts to rise it will start rising quickly. For that perfect crunch toffee you want it to just reach 300f /149c, take it off the heat just as it almost hits 300f, as it will still be rising at that point.
Make sure you quickly dip in the apples, using a spoon to get any areas that are not covered and dangle them over the saucepan for an excess to drip off. (be careful too, as the toffee mixture is extremely hot).

Place them on a tray lined with parchment paper to set, which takes about 10 minutes and they are ready to grab and enjoy!
