Some bags of chips/crisps can be pretty high synned. So how can you make your own low syn version?
With one of these nifty little kitchen gadgets...
You can find these handy little gadgets on Amazon here:
Microwave Vegetable/Potato Chip Maker
You may be asking what the hell is it?
Well it is a microwave Crisp Chip maker. With it you can make low fat crisps in the microwave without the need for any oil.
It comes with a nifty little potato slicer for slicing your potatoes.
The above picture is a 150g potato sliced up (skin left off). Which I felt was more than enough for a tasty low fat snack.
These do need to be synned though, especially when used as a snack, because they are classed as what is called a tweak by Slimming World.
"But it is a FREE FOOD", I hear you say. You are correct, It is, however using a free food to make a snack item like this, is likely to be an item which you could easily over consume in a non filling way, and is less high satiety because it is not part of a filling meal.
So to be safe, a potato this size (150g) would be 5 syns, which isn't bad at all if you fancy some crisps, as you get quite a bit more than you would in a bag of crisps.
Now onto the directions (just incase anyone does buy one): Once you have sliced your potato (and I do recommend using a small size potato, as otherwise the slices will be to big for the tray). Lay the slices out on some kitchen paper or similar and add your seasoning. I used some sea salt for these ones, but you could try various other season mixes.
Then place one potato slice in each individual space and you are ready to cook them in the microwave. I would say these take approx 6 mins, but once you get to beyond 4 ½ mins, I would keep an eye on them. They will have started to turn a golden/brown colour when they are ready, like the below picture:
Once you take them out of the microwave, I recommend removing them from the holder straight away and placing them in your bowl to cool down, as otherwise they will stick together.
Here is my bowl of the completed low fat Microwave crisps:
and as you can see, that is a rather satisfying portion, for a small potato and not many syns either.
Here are some season suggestions, add the mixed seasoning to a little ziplock bag and label, and you can just coat your crisps with a little bit as you want it. I recommend adding the season once the potatoes are cooked.

or for a simple seasoning, just add a little bit of sea salt or even some vinegar - yum!!
I got mine off ebay which arrived 2 days ago, made a batch last night and have to say they were yummy.
I am with you on these - they look delish! and as a treat I think they are a great idea. I won't be synning mine either as I'll only have them occasionally and they are so much better for you than conventional crisps. We are having ginger prawn stir fry tonight as it looked so good on your pics!
(I can't wait for the tomato tart recipe to appear!) Thanks again for posting the link on iVillage. Hope you are doing ok over there :o)
Thanks for the recipe, why do we have to syn them? i do this online so don't have a group/consultant to ask. thanks.x
There is a of debate circulating that it may be a misuse of free foods. As they would not be filling as say a Jacket Potato. However I am not synning them. I use one tiny potato. If you are using a whole bag of potatoes a night then I could understand it. But I doubt anyone would do that.
I ordered one of these last night after reading your post about them! I'm so excited, I can't wait for it to arrive! I've been trying to make them on a plate but they awlays seem to stick and my fingers keep getting burnt =P! I won't be synning mine either!
Can you use other vegetables for this? will it work the same way and then make vegetable crisps?
yep you can use various root vegetables.
Would you syn them on extra easy?
I bought one of these and the heat from the potato burnt and melted the plastic.
